What did people with bad eyesight do before glasses?

So many people wear glasses nowadays, and glasses are so easy and cheap to get (especially if you buy online) that we don’t think much about the inconvenience of having glasses. But what about people born before glasses existed? How did people get along? And were those people effectively unable to do real work? As it turns out, they were not––for the most part. It turns out that our ancestors had a variety of ways to get around poor eyesight, including special magnifying lenses.
