The story of America’s last major smallpox outbreak

But, thanks to a huge push by the global medical and scientific communities, the disease has been all but wiped out. This video tells the story of the last time there was a a significant outbreak in the United States, back in 1947. While the United States had been smallpox free before 1947, many parts of the world weren’t. As a result, travelers could bring the disease back to the States, causing sometimes major panics.
