You know that feeling you get when you eat too much? Of course you do, it’s called being full. But isn’t there a different between eating too much because you were hungry and eating too much because the food was so delicious you couldn’t stop? Of course there is! Can you express that easily in English? Sadly, no. If you spoke Georgian, however, you could simply say that those donuts were so you shemomedjamo, which means “To eat past the point of being full just because the food tastes good.”

Or what about gaining weight? There’s lots of reasons to gain weight. Pregnancy is one example. Emotional overeating is another. If you spoke German, you could easily delineate why you gained why by describing the gain as kummerspeck, or the weight you gain from emotional overeating.

See Cracked for seven more examples.
